Isaiah 13:9

"Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate:  and He shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it."

A continued picture of that which has happened and that which shall happen to any and all people that rebell against the Lord.

Behold, the day of the Lord cometh - word study, come; word study/phrase, 'the day of the Lord';  word study, behold;  almost 1300 times 'behold' is used throughout Scripture;  'The day of the Lord' is used 23 times.  all these usage of words and phrases are common of that which God uses to point us to that which is coming.  The warning itself is that such a day is coming - 'behold it cometh'

Behold - is used to draw the attention of the reader or listerner to the word of God that is getting ready to be pronounced.  How important is this word, when used almost 1300 times in Scripture.  Any time you see it, you should pay attention to that which is getting ready to be declared.
Behold it cometh - There are certain to behold the significance upon us for that which has been, shall be and is.  Such a day came to Israel; such a day came to Sodom and Gomorrah; such a day came to Judah; such a day came to Babylon, etc.  It is a comon message to behold it coming.  Two other references to other poritons of Scripture to 'behold . . .cometh' 1. Behold He shall come - Christ has come, is coming to seek and save the lost and shall come again for His second coming; 2.  Behold he cometh - the use is found of SAtan will come, has come and will continue to come until the end of time to destroy and cause men to flee from God.
the day of the Lord - the reference here is the day of the Lord coming for destruction, judgment and wrath;  Who can stand to read such sorrow?  It makes one want to hide his face and weep for the sorrow employed by God against such sinful men.  And what shall we do or say if God would send His prophet today to our land and pronounce such a thing?  It would do well for us to consider such a thing, especially since we are so close to it anyway.

Isaiah 13:6

"Howl ye; for the day of the Lord is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty."

I have marked in my own personal Bible, verse 6 - 13 of this chapter for its full content of this dreadful day.  It is not for Christians to gloat that they shall miss these punishments, but to weep for those that shall have to face it.  It is a reminder to us, of what God has done for us in delivering us from His wrath.  And it is to remember, that Christ endured the wrath of God for my sins and yours.

Howl ye; for the day of the Lord is at hand - what a horrible day this shall be;  word/phrase study, 'the day of the Lord';  Mentioned 23 times in Scripture.  Much like another word study, 'in that day', it is a fixed day.  When God shall pour out His wrath on men for their sin.  They shall face His anger and who can stand before it.  This phrase of this verse, gives 3 reactions.  Howl - the day of the Lord - its time, it is here.
Howl ye -  the cry of anguish that needs to be made due directly to the condition that shall be and is;  People don't howl for no reason.  You howl for the burden and exertion in your heart and soul.  Crying is one thing.  PEople cry when their hurt; when something happens that is happy or sad.  People will break down crying  when emotions are moved.  But howling is deep, pentretating remorse, anguish, filling of the soul with sorrow, deep sorrow.  It is the book of Lamentations, when Jeremiah saw the plight of a destroyed people, a ruined city and thousands of lives lost due to their sin against God.

The day of the Lord is at hand - the time is at hand, meaning it is eminate.  the day of the Lrod is not, but rarely associated with blessing, mostly associated with wrath, judgment and death.

Isaiah 12:4

"And in that day shall ye say, Praise the Lord, call upon His Name, declare His doings among the people, make mention that His Name is exalted."

Upon the specific day of God's completion we see the response of His people.

And in that day shall ye say - word study/phrase, 'in that day';  Over 100 times in scripture, this phrase is used to point to points in time , of history that shall reveal the will of God.  God is all knowing of past, present and future and foretells to His children of some things that shall be.  He also tells us the response that shall be, of such times.  On this day when adoration shall be given, we see several times in history that could be its revelation.

1.  It could easily point to the day in which God delives Israel from their captivity.  The prophecy here is in 700 BC.  Although Israel is under bondage, Judah had not fallen yet to Babylon.  They would be carried away for 70 years then released.  AT that release they could rejoice, 'In that Day'.
2.  The day of Christ.  The foretelling of the Messiah to come and bring the kingdom of God to men.  REdemption, salvation and relationship with Him through Christ would and did create great joy and rejoicing.  Pointing this truth to 'in that day'.
3.  And we know that Scripture is always revealing of spiritual truth.  The day in which all sin shall be put away at the Lord's return.  All devices shall be removed of Satan and we shall be with Him forever.  Very much our eyes look to see Him and long to be with Him 'in that day'.

Praise the Lord, call upon His Name - the soul of the believer give adoration unto Him;  Two means of that praise is found before us.
1. Praise the Lord - a constant directive in the Psalms for His children.

Isaiah 12:2

"Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid:  for the Lord JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation."

Such a declaration as this is worship unto the Lord.  It is the personal, declarative part of every Christians life.

Behold, God is my salvation - the very personal reality of a true born again believer;  Can you say God is my salvation?  'Behold', meaning I pronounce and declare this truth.  It is with punctuation that we set it upn the next phrase following.  'behold', what?  Behold, God.  That in itself is profound and deep.  To behold God is something above and beyond this world.  Although I know the certainty that that comma in between the two words, changes it drastically.  We still hold awe of that announcement.  'Behold God' and all His glory, might, holiness, and wonder.  OUr finite minds, eyes, ears and ability to comprehend cannot obtain it or understand it.  It is beyond us to behold God.  Too often in Scripture, when God appeared, the next words were, 'I fell like a dead man'.  His fullness is our undoing.  OUr sin too great, His holiness and glory to rich to behold.  and that in itself may push people away from every desiring to behold God.  God came down and spoke and thundered on the mount, and the children of Israel said to Moses, 'You go to talk to God and behold Him.  But don't let Him talk to us again, lest we die.'

What a differnece:  'Behold, God. . . '  as if to say, 'Here is the Lrod God' in prsentation and visual appointment.  Compared to 'Behold God' as if to say, 'Focus your eyes on Him and examine His glory and power.'  All because of one punctuation; a comma.

'God is my salvation' - is the cry of every profession of faith from His children.  'There is no other name given among men, whereby we must be saved.'  'And thou shalt call His Name, Jesus; for He shall save His people from their sins'.  And found in this path of redemption from a lost estate garnered all the way back to the Garden of Eden, is found God's plan.  Adan and Eve sinned; a need for redeeming us from our lost estate was necessary.  And God knew all this, and ordained that Christ would come and give His life for lost souls.  The author of salvation is God.  The hope for salvation is God.  The way of salvation is God.  It is the root of all things in us.  And the soul that finds Jesus, receives His death, and embraces His way, is delivered from judgment for eternity on his sins against God.  And is able to say, 'God is my salvation'.  I cannot save myself;  my works are not suffecient; my goodness is not good enough; only Christ can save me.

Isaiah 12:1

"And in that day thou shalt say, O Lord, I will praise thee:  though Thou wast angry with me, Thine anger is turned away, and Thou comfortedst me."

A verse describing a personal conversation with God.  The issues of judgment laid out and delivered leads to this pronouncement.

And in that day thou shalt say - word study/phrase, 'in that day'; Over a 100 times in the Scripture, this reference is used to point to that which shall be.  And God Who knows all things, declares, that at that paticular day, in which, all these things that have gone before in chapter 11 shall come to pass, then you will speak these words.  God sees everything of past, present and future.  It is impossible for our finite minds to understand infinite.  It is amazing to us when two people say the same thing at the same time.  WE make comments about it.  It is not an everyday occurence.  And out of wisdom and experience of life and time one may be able to say, this or that shall happen.  And they shall be failry accurate.

but only the Lord knows exactly when and what we shall say in the future.  We have a hard enough time remembering what we said yesteray.  But the Lord has no difficulty in any of this.

O Lord, I will praise Thee - word study, 'will';  The two studies in the Word in what God says He will do and the second, is what we or other men will do.  But this true or should be true of all God's people, we will praise the Lord.  The personal pronoun declares, yours and mine, own individual action, I will praise Him.  And note, that God is foretelling that this person shall be speaking directly to God: 'I will praise Thee'.  He is speaking to God, not about God.  PErsonal direct prayer is the most intimate and relational that any child of God can have.

Far too many in the church talk about God, but rarely talk to God.  They have no personal relationship.  But the true child of God cannot go without speaking to their Lord.  And one of the things that lay on the heart of Christians is praise unto Him Who is worthy to be praised.  Consider all that God has done, is doing and will do, brings one to praise Him.  OH, how much HE has done for us in redeeming us, providing for us, loving us, forgiving us, leading us, blessing us, keeping us, empowering us for His great Name's sake.  These are the recollections of our mind and heart and we give thansk and praise unto Him for that which we remember.

Isaiah 11:11

"And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set His hand again the second time to recover the remnant of His people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea."

There is a day coming, soon and very soon.  this verse offers us a glimpse again of that which shall be, but not yet.

And it shall come to pass - word study/phrase, 'And it shall come to pass'; word study, came;  Over 400 times in Scripture this reference is used.  This is God's Holy Word,  and if God says something is going to come to pass, then it is an absolute that it is going to happen.  To see these words at the beginning of so many verses in the Bible, is a direct message from God to the reader, this soon shall happen.  Time period is not important to me.  If God says it, is certain in His time.  What is my time or timing?  ONly chaos.  But His timing is perfect for He sees and knows everything of past, present and future.

And it shall come to pass in that day - word study/phrase, 'in that day';  Over 100 times used in Scripture about a paticualr day that shall be.  The Lord knows that day.  But if being foretold, then it is wise to prepare for how this day may impact us and affect us.  What can we do without the Lord?  Nothing.  So we need to be where we are supposed to be in waiting upon Him, listening to Him.

Isaiah 11:10

"And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek:  and His rest shall be glorious."

A continued Messianic prophecy, 700 years before Christ.  EAch prophecy declares the power of God to foretell what shall  be.  Who else can do this but God?  There is none.

And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse - word study/phrase, 'in that day';  There is to be a day that bring forth the promise from God about the Christ.  'In that day' is a special revelation found over 100 times in the Bible that leads God's people to God's will.  It is that which shall be, but is not yet.  'In that day' is a day of which only God, Who is omniscient, and omnipresent would know of.  God had foretold from Genesis 3 that He would make a way.  He promsied to Abraham that out of his line there would be a King.  He promised to Moses that there would be a great High Priest.  He promised to DAvid, that he would always have a King to sit on the throne from His line.  The Lord Jesus Christ, is the King of Kings, and the Lord of Lords.  He is Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.

Out of the root of Jesse was the prophecy.  The root came from Abraham, from Isacce, from Jacob of the tribe of Judah.  David, the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz and Ruth, what a glorious work told there in the book of Ruth and the workings of God for His purposes.

Isaiah 11:9

"They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain:  for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea."

The previous verses from 6 to this present verses have described a bliss of perfection among men and the earth.  In our present world, men are set on one side, animals on another.  But in this picture described from verse 6 - 8, there is harmony, there is oneness.  There is peace among the animal kingdom and all is well.   No doubt, this is also a picture of the Garden of Eden and what Adam enjoyed while there.  This is a picture that it shall be restored, that which was lost due to sin.

They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain - word study, all;  A picture of peace and tranquility upon God's holy mountain, no doubt referring to Jerusalem;  Since the time of David and his battle to conquer that city and make it his, to the time of present day, that city has never known peace.  Even today, it is divided into three parts, one to the Jew, one to the Muslum and one to the Christian.  This phrase declares to us of a time, a day, a place that no more hurt or destroying shall happen.  It is not this present one, for it has never known peace.

Jerusalem, has seen great devastation and destruction.  And it is not done.  There shall continue to be war and divisions until Christ comes again.  And then a new heaven and a new earth in which this bliss of harmony and perfection shall be engrained to all of His creation.

God speaks that they shall no hurt nor destroy, and all power is in His word to accomplish and do it.  It is not in the power of men to do this.  They seek peace, talk of peace and harmony, but have never accomplished, nor shall they.  'Peace, peace, when there is no peace.'  ONly God is able to do such a thing and if He has spoken it, it shall be done.  No more hurt, no more destruction, oh, what a joyful time that is coming.  It gives much hope and heart to long for the coming of the Lord.

Isaiah 11:4

"But with righteousness shall He judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth:  and He shall smite the earth with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips shall He slay the wicked."

A continued description of Messianic prophecy, that which He is and that which the Lord shall do.

But with righteousness shall He judge the poor - Christ shall come in His Own righteousness to declare and judge the earth;  'All our righteousness is as filthy rags'; but His righteousness is complete and perfect in His Own self.  Righteousness is defined as being right with God.  Sinner or being in sin cannot constitute being righteous.  If one is in sin and thinks that they are righteous, they are decieved by being self-righteous.  A Christian knows that reality, that they are not rightoues, nor can they be.  But accepting Christ, He covers them in His Own righteousness.  That does not allow nor permit sin.  To embrace sin, is to thrust off the coat of His pure and undefiled righteousness.

Christ being righteous shall judge His own.  The poor mentioned here is not the standard of being poor in money or possessions.  'Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.'  Christ shall hold those who have held His ways in truth and reward them accordingly.  He knows the heart, He knows the intents, He knows the decisions and His righteous judgment makes no error, or misstep.  Poverty in spirit is to be poured out to be filled with Him.  If you do not empty the vessel, there is no room to receive.  His judgment shall be rewards to those that have lived poor in spirit on this earth for His Name's sake.  This is the reason that Christ, in the sermon on the mount, said, 'they are blessed of My FAther.'

And reprove with equity for the meek of the earth -

Isaiah 11:3

"And shall make Him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord:  and He shall not judge ater the sight of His eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of His ears:"

The description of Christ, His anointing, His abilities in mind and heart to accomplish His Father's will.

And shall make Him of quick understaning in the fear of the Lord - word study, make; word study/phrase, 'fear of the Lord';  The Spirit of God was laid upon Christ in the last verse in 4 mighty ways.  EAch of those working, accmplishing and fulfilling all the God intended.  The result of that is begun here in this verse, 'And shall make Him'.  The gifts of God make us what we are.  He gives and He can remove.  Let us never take it for granted what the Lord has made us to be.  Paul says,' I am what I am by the grace of God.'  And thus are we all.

He was not made to have a 'quick understanding' alone.  His quick understanding was to lead Him to the highest attainment of men, to fear the Lord.  Throughout all of Scripture, this phrase is used and described.  Everything for a child of God is found in their fear of the Lord.  Nations, and individuals fall when they lose the fear of the Lord.  "It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.'   This was given to Him in understanding to apply and walk as an example and witness of this truth.  Many men only receive the understanding late in life, or at death.  The thief on the cross is an example of this.  SAved? yes. Life lived for the Lord?  No.  He did not come to a 'quick understanding of the fear of the Lord till his dying day.  Many a life is wasted in service to God for the lack of this one truth, 'a quick understanding'.

It would do well for many parents and grandparents to learn this truth and pray for this for the next generation.

Isaiah 11:2

"And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord;"

This chapter 11 of Isaiah is another portion of Scripture of the Messianic prophecy of Christ.  Over 700 years before Christ birth, He was foretold of Who He was, and why He would come and what He would do.  Blessed God that made a way and keeps us in His way till all His church is found safe in the haven of rest.

This verse has 4 'spirit's of' upon the Lord that would do well for us to learn of and glean from:
And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him - God is to be worshipped in spirit and in truth;  God is a Spirit, the Holy Spirit;  As this prophecy is foretelling of, He Who is to come, it reveals to us that God shall be upon Him.  We see that when Christ was baptzied and as He came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord descended upon Him as a dove.  Now this was the fulfilling of two promises from God to men.  the Lord had told John the Baptist, that the one he saw where the Spirit of the Lord descended upon the man as a dove was the Christ.  So it was to fulfill to John, Who, He was.  And the second Scripture to be fulfilled is found here, 'the spirit of the Lord resting upon Him'.   It is apparent that Scriptures reveals that all along the Spirit of the Lord was upon Him.  At the age of 12, the religious leaders marvelled at the 'spirit that was on Him'.  When He began His ministry, many times they marvelled at His words.  'No man spake like this Man.'

It is evidence that proves such a spirit upon Him.  Testimony bore the record from those that heard Him.  And even today, His Word is pronounced and brings comfort to His saints, instruction for their lives and promises to be fulfilled.  And even to the unbeliever, they know that no man could speak like this, teach like this, live like this without the 'spirit of the Lord upon Him.'

It is our duty to live with the same spirit upon us.  We are not of our own spirit, for it is weak and sinful.  OUr spirits fail us.  His spirit comes to fill us.  'What spirit are you of?'  Being adopted into the family of God allows us to receive the 'spirit of the Lord upon us'.  We bear in our bodies the spirit of the Lord.  WE are witnesses to these things of His power, redemption, love and goodness.  And the world that knows us, takes note that we are no longer that which we once was, but separated and changed into His likeness.  All because the spirit of the Lord is upon us.

Now many saints have born the record throughout the centuries of this fulfillment.  Many saints have done great things for their Lord and His kingdom, because there was another spirit in them than flesh.  The Spirit of the Lord came upon them, and they rose up in their time and place and served the Lord faithfully.  We are given the same spirit, for the same purpose, for our time in which we live right now.  We can never do any more for Him, than the spirit that rests upon us.

The spirit of wisdom and understanding - the second spirit of the 4 mentioned in this verse;  Wisdom and understanding is a gift from God.  God imparts and allows for men to excel in such things.  He gives and He can take away.  'If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, Who giveth liberally, and upbradieth not, and it shall be given.'  Solomon asked of God for wisdom.  And God said, that he would be the wisest king.  God gives the ability.

Many study and read for understanding.  What good is understanding is there is no ability to apply it?

Isaiah 10:27

"And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing."

A continued study of major points to be found in this verse.

And it shall come to pass in that day - word study/phrase, 'and it shall come pass'; word study/phrase, 'in that day';  word study, came;  Over 400 times, 'and it shall come to pass' is used in Scripture.  Over 100 times 'in that day' is used in Scripture.  We are left with the instructions for that which shall be.  It is a prophetic note of what God is going to allow or do.  It is given for the sake of men to flee sin and obey the Lord.  It is given to deliver from wrath unto mercy.  Alas, how few find it.  How few understand.  For having eyes to see, they cannot see; having ears to hear, they cannot hear.  May God give us perceiving hearts, open eyes and ears to understand the way of the Lord.

That this burden shall be taken away from thy should - a burden has been laid upon the children of Israel, due directly to their sin and disobedience.

Isaiah 10:20

"And it shall come to pass, in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him that smote them; but shall stay upon the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth."

In verse 20, we begin a new 'paragraph' or description.  All one them or meaning from verse 20 - 23 and then verse 24 through the end of the chapter.

And it shall come to pass in that day - word study, came; word study, 'And it shall come to pass'; word study, 'in that day';  It is was one of the prophetic verses that we have before us.  Prophetic in that which was going to happen to Israel.  Prophetic in that which happens to the church.  Prophetic in that which happens to individaul Christians.  Prophetic to the wicked.  It is a warning to turn and flee from sin.  To turn to that which is good and right in the sight of the Lord.

Isaiah 10:15

"Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith?  or shall the saw magnify itself against him that shaketh it?  as if the rod should shake itself against them that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up itself, as if it were no wood."

Israel and Judah have reaped the whirlwind of God's anger for their sin.  The arm of the Lord was through the nations of the earth to come against them.  Now they baotst themselves against the people of God and God.  God is not unaware of this, for He knows everything.

Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith?  great questions of the Bible;  The king of Assyria has fallen prey to the lies of SAtan.  Satan came and congratulated the king on his conquering of Israel.  He said, 'Way to go, look what you have done to them.  No one could have done what you did. Truly you are a great king.'  And with those words, pride entered his heart and mind.  And instead of understanding that he was simply a vessel the Lord used to punish Israel, he though of himself more than what he should have.  Men are always prone to that sin of pride.  Satan uses that weapon so well to cause us to fall.

Lost men are more prone to it, for they are in ignorance of how they came to be, why they are here or what is coming.  A child of God, who knows the Word, has learned, we are here and allowed to be here by God's mercy and grace.  OUr breath is a gift and He holds it and can take it from us.

Isaiah 10:4

"Without Me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain.  For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still."

We come to the last of the 4 times this phrase is used.  We see the continued wrath of God being poured upon His children.  Directly for their rebellion, their sin, their failure to obey Him.

Without Me they shall bow down under the prisoners - when God turns away from His people, there is nothing good that will come upon them;  Here He continues that even the prisoner, who were in chains, under authority would rule over them.  They would bow down to those that were criminals, and found guilty in the eyes of justice.  OH, what a plight to behold, when even the captive rule over God's people.  And all this is because they have provoked the Lord to answer for their sins and neglect of His ways.

You reap what you sow.  Those that sow disobedience unto God, shall reap His wrath.

Isaiah 10:3

"And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far?  to whom will ye flee for help?  and where will ye leave your glory?"

We see the pronouncement of judgment upon the people of God continue in chapter 10.  We have 3 questions in this verse that we must deal with.  And in the next verse we return to phrase used 3 times in chapter 9.

And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far?  word study, 'great questions of the Bible', the first of 3 in this verse; word study, 'will';  word study, 'come';  God has announced that judgment is coming in direct response to their sin and rebellion.  In the first verse of this chapter, He pronounced 'Woe'.  Never is it a good thing when God says this.  Then He proceeds to announce their sin and what they was guilty of.  He will now question them on what they thought would be their deliverance from His wrath and accountability for their actions.

'What will you do in the day of visitation?'  There is day of visitation for all of us.  There is the day the Gospel is presented to us, and we are left with a chocie of choosing good or evil.  That day of visitation is from God, Who has said, 'The gospel has appeared unto all men.'

Isaiah 9:21

"Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh; and they together shall be aginst Judah.  For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still."

We come to the close of this chapter, but not the close of God's wrath being poured out.  It carries on over into chapter 10.  But let us conclude this chapter and our study of this verse.

Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh; and they together shall be against Judah - the division that was seen and known among the tribes of Israel;  After Solomon was king and he had departed from the Lord and served the false gods of his wifes, the Lord divided the children of Israel.  He gave Jeroboam 10 tribes while he allowed for Rehoboam, the son of Solomon to maintain 2 tribes of Judah and Benjamin.  I believe that Benjamin simply stayed with Judah because Saul had been king and they felt some allegiance to the procession of the tribes who had had a king.  Regardless of the why, the Levites quickly moved out of Israel after Jeroboam set up the fasle calfs in Dan and Beersheba.  They came into Judah, and thus the 10 tribes of Israel were rebellious in all their ways until the Lord removed them.  But of all the 10 tribes of Israel under Jeroboam, the sons of Joseph were the strongest and most populated.

A reference again to the lineage of descendants for us to note.  Remember Joseph.  A man chosen, blessed, used of God and upright in all his ways.  And here are his two children, Manasseh and Ephraim.  Ephraim receiving the blessing of Jacob, being the younger but preferred above Manasseh.  But almost everything we know of them, they practiced unfaithfulness to the ways of God.  'Ephraim is a cake not turned - Let them alone'.  Never is it the intent of a parent, grandparent to see their children go astray or pracitce sin.  Definitely a prayer for God to keep our future generations, holy and right with Him.  Again, long term praying has much more in consideration than the temporal of 'bless me now Lord'.

We see the division in the household.  The same people from Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, yet divided by their ways.  Set against each over.  This is no family squabble, this is over right and wrong.  this is over future ways of the people for blessing or cursing.  What shall we do when our loved ones turn away from the Lord?  Jesus said He did not come to bring peace but a sword of division.  A mother against the daugher in law; parents against children, children against parents; siblings against each other over the ways of the Lord.  Seek for peace and harmony in the Lord, by the Lord and for the Lord.  Anything else will come short of His glory.

Being set against Judah reveals to us that they are against the Lord.  You cannot be contrary to the will of God.  God orders the events, leaders and happenings of our world for His purpose.  WE are to pray for them in authority over us.  'He removeth kings and setteth up kings'.  Judah was the chosen tribe for the Messiah, the Lion of Judah, the leader, David was the chosen lineage.  To go against them meant to go agains the way that the Lord had decreed.  How can you win, when fighting against God?  We are to go with God, in the events and happenigns of this world, not against Him.  Lest we be found in sin.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still - word study, all; stud of His Being, 'hand stretched out';

Isaiah 9:17

"Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows:  for every one is an hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaketh folly.  For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still."

We continue through this chapter, stopping at every verse that uses this phrase, 'For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.'  Their sins mount, and God is forced to respond out of His Own holiness and justice.  His Own people should have known better and done better.  But, alas, does the church do better?

Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men - their sin had brought them to this point of destruction;  Systemically ages and sects of peole are mentioned of how God sets Himself against them.  All due to their sins of leadership, priests and the people following after the sin.  The two previous verses, verse 15 and 16, are descriptive of the sin.  We start this verse with, 'therefore'; in direct response to those sins here is what is the response of the Lord.

'Therefore the Lord shall' is the action taken by God.  It is always cause and effect.  The cause of sin, produces the effect of the wrath of God and His judgment to fall.  The cause of faithfulness and obedience, produces the effect of God's mercy and blessings.  Because of their sinful ways listed in previous verses, over 100's of years of continued rebellion, idols, and continued sin - 'therefore the Lord shall' is the result.

"have no joy in their young men" - The target is listed and named.  Now if you are a man in your late teens, 20's, or 30's would you not sit up and take notice to this.  Rarely do most have the foresight to respond to the telling of things, whether related to them or not.  If God is setting Himself agains the young men, how long before He reaches out to touch the old men?  Yet, most are never moved or concerned until it affects them alone.  Never do we care until it lands in our own backyard.  Then, normally, its too late.  Why?  Because we did not take heed to our ways, or the ways of God.

Isaiah 9:12

"The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth.  For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still."

I stop at this verse becuase of the last part of it.  Isaiah, the prophet, had been sent to foretell the destruction of Israel, Judah and Jerusalem.  Israel first was carried away; then Judah within a 100 years from Isaiah.  But all the while God was preparing to judge His people, He sent them hope and invitation to turn from their wicked way and receive His mercy.  They rejected it.  Thus we have this verse repeated 4 times.

The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind - God is not limited in who, or what He may use to judge a people;  Here are the enemies of God against His people.  How upset the Lord must have been to have to employ these heathen to judge His people for their wickedness.  They very nations and people, that had been conquered under David and defeated, were now to be used to destroy Israel.  God had promised Israel if they obeyed and followed Him, He would destroy all their enemies.  But they not obey nor listen, and God took these enemies, whom He would have destroyed, and allowed for them to conquer Israel.

Now note, the setting of Israel, they are trapped between the two armies.  Syria was to the northeast, the Philistines were to the south west and Israel laid between the two.  Where to go?  What to do?  They never turned to the Lord, but to their false gods.

Jeroboam had set up a false god in Dan and in Beersheba.  One to the north near Syria; one to the south near Philistia.  But they never looked up to the heavens and trusted or cried out to God.  We are surrounded in this earth on all sides.  Our enemy comes from behind and stands in front of us; we must be conginitve of where he is and how he comes.  Our only deliverance and hope is upward.  'Looking unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith' is above us.

Isaiah 9:2

"The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light:  they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined."

In this chapter 9, there is many Messanic prophecies for us to rejoice in.  Israel was able to rejoice, for God had promised a Deliverer.  Just as Moses was sent into Egypt to deliver the children of Israel, so would the Messiah be to restore the kingdom.  Now they thought a kingdom that rivalled DAvid's powerhouse.  But, they did not know a Savior, the Son of God, Jesus, Emmanuel, Who would rule the hearts and minds of men, women and children; both JEw and Gentile.

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light - all sinners walk in darkness, but God sends the Light to them;  'The people' - which people?  who is being described and talked about here?  From back at the close of chapter 8, we are given a picture of darkness filling the nations, the people of the world and specifically the children of Israel, God's Own people.  The universality of all this is found in the SCripture, 'All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.'  'There is none righteous, no, not one.'  Sin is the root of all mankind.  Born in sin, given to sin, it affects all nations, and all peoples.  There is no remedy or victory except in Christ.  These people is all inclusiveness.

'They walked in darkness' - to walk is to continue in motion from one point to another point.  It is hard to tell how many steps, miles we walk in our lifetime.  Just the same is our position of every decision, every action is walking towards a point.  Every choice takes us toward out destined end or result.  Every choice and walk toward sin, is a step towards hell.  How many steps till you arrive in hell?  How many steps till you arrive at that destination.  WE are left to God's mercy to deliver us from this wide and broad path. where there is no light, no Light, then darkness is found.  The souls that are in sin and lost, are without the Light.  Therefore they walk in darkness.  Oh, how many there is in the world today.  There are 7 billion on the planet, and over 5 billion are walking in darkness.  'Many there be on that broad and wide path that leads to destruction.'  They have no light, they know not the truth - remembering, 'The truth shall set you free.'  Satan keeps them from the Light.  We see them stumbling around, for they know not whether they are going.  And what shall we say of hell - where there is no light, no Light.  How awful, how dreadful, never to see again, but only to know the torrments of pain, sorrow, craze, aloneness, desperation, no hope, no mercy, no relief, no light - only darkness.  Jostled around for all eternity in darkness; walking, running, no where to go; falling, sitting, no relief, no end in sight.

'Have seen a great light' - it is much in comparison to Sauls conversion in Acts 9.  Here was a man bent on destroying the Christian church.  But on his way to Damascus, everything changed.  He was walking in darkness, and then a great light that put him to the ground.  It was the Lord.   And this man in darkness, saw the Light of the world in Jesus Christ.  He went 3 more days in darkness with no eye sight until the Lord sent Ananias to bring him more fully into the right way with God.  And then the glorious light came into his life with baptism, healing of his eyes, and a call to serve Him.
It is this way for all who come to Christ.  They are in darkness until the Light comes.  And where the Light is received the darkness must be put away.
