Isaiah 23:17

"And it shall come to pass after the end of seventy years, that the Lord will visit Tyre, and she shall turn to her hire, and shall commit fornication with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth."

I am not going to do the normal way of description that I do the other verses for commentary.  I simply want to give a quick point on the horror of this verse.

And it shall come to pass after the end of seventy years, that the Lord will visit Tyre - word study, came; word study/phrase, 'and it shall come to pass'; word study, 'I will' when the Lord declares that He will do something, it will happen;  Another mark of this verse is the 70 years.  Numerically, there is a consistence among numbers that God uses - 7, 3, 40 and 12.  It is often fun to go through and match the numbers up.

Tyre has been judged and sentenced to desturciton.  It will lie waste for 70 years.  The significance of 70 years is that that is an entire generation.  there is a two fold purpose for God visitng Tyre after the 70 years.  One to judge them in their sin and for their sin; and second, to take their prized possessions for the use of those 'dwell before the Lord' v. 18.

Now here is the point that horrifyies me about this verse:  They are going to be brought back from desolation and 'it shall come to pass' - so it is a certain thing - that 'she shall turn to her hire, and commit fornication with all the kingdoms of the world'.  They shall be brought back.  and when they return they go to sin to their own destruction.  And immediately I think, it had been better to not to have been brought back, than to be brought back and to go sin to their own destruction.

I wonder how manytimes, God in mercy allows for another opportunity, one more chance, one more invitation.  And all of it, refused, rejected and removed from hope in Christ.  All out of their desire to sin in fornicaiton.  SExual sins, sexual impuritites, and love of self, fuels the hearts of men to turn from God and embrace the lies of  SAtan.  Oh, how many souls destroyed in this earth because of this very thing.  How many today are pressing toward destruction and hell all because they abandoned the right way, the good way for their own desires.
