I Kings 19:12

"And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice."

For most, this verse speaks volumes to the soul and heart. All the loud clamouring, shouting, ridiculous antics and personal preferences amount to nothing at the close of the day. It is the still small voice of the Lord that does the work. The strong wind, the earthquake, and the fire declare that the Lord was not in them. That is a study in itself, that if the Lord was not in them, what or who caused them and how does such things relate to our current natural disasters? Then we come to his verse that speaks of two of the three and the last half of the verse: and after the fire a still small voice - after all the natural extremes, it is the simplest thing that breaks Elijah; The focus of this verse is to prepare us for the next verse. The still small voice is the cause of Elijah's response. Elijah was in despair, depression and total animosity toward mankind. He looked to no man but felt he was only in the Presence of the Lord. This display of God's glory and power here changes all that. The thought of this phrase is that it does not mention that the Lord was in the still small voice. And it is easy to assume that the Lord was in the still small voice in comparison of the other three natural acts. For every act is concluded with this phrase, 'the Lord was not in this'. Then the still small voice, but nothing else said; so it is easy to agree that because it is does not follow the other three that there is a change in the nature of this. Not to mention all the other acccounts of God's still small voice that does His work inthe hearts and souls of men. It is in agreement that God is in the still small voice. And I would offer to you an alternative study of this found in Adam Clarke; He states that the three natural events were done but by a supernatural force; and each of these three things is finished with, 'But the Majesty of the Lord was not in these'; the still small voice is the lone voice of singing in the stillness. Is there anything more impacting than in a group of people, silence prevails, and then Divinely led, a soloist begins to sing. What a tremendous force is experienced when it is God! We always consider the voice to speak to Elijah, but what if it is the Name of God being declared in song like we read of in Revelation? It is a great declaration and it is powerful for it broke Elijah. And oh, when the Spirit of God comes and speaks and it breaks our voices.
