"Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life seeketh thy life: but with me thou shalt be in safeguard."
Abiathar had seen his family killed and escaped to tell David. David knows they died because of him, a huge weight to carry. David offers this verse as protection to him all the days of his life. This verse has deeper and richer truths for us. It is Christ speaking to us, His people. Did He not say in John 15, 'Abide in Me'? did He not say, "Fear not"? did He not say, 'If they do this unto Me how much more will they do it unto you'? This verse is as prophetic as any in the Old Testament of that which was to be, which is and which was. Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever. Now let us see that we are doing all to arrive safely in His arms of protection and blessing. Are you abiding in Him? Have you learned that truth that the only hope of being Spirit filled and endued with power from on high is by abiding in Him, our blessed Lord? Too many Christians view this is as impossible. Having no desire no inclination to learn what it is to abide in Christ. We are our own worse enemies in this spiritual struggle. Learn of Him, and abide in Him that He may be glorified. Fear not - let no fear of what this life may hold; 'I have not given you a spirit of fear, but of power of love and of a sound mind'. Fear not man, but know that our heavenly Father watches over us and is able to deliver and protect us. And those of our beloved brethern who were martyred, they feared not what man could do to them but closed their eyes here and opened them at His feet. for he that seeketh my life seeketh thy life - we are with the Lord and the enemies of our Lord are our enemies; If they hate God and Christ then they will hate us. if they seek to destroy the Gospel message of Jesus Christ as the only way of salvation, they will seek to silence us as well. If they reject Him, they will reject us. Let this not be a mystery why beloved ones oppose us, and why the world shuns us. WE are not of this world, but we are pilgrims passing through. Let the wisdom of this phrase be attached to us, that we are one with Him. He abides within us and we abide within Him. But with me thou shalt be in safeguard - the second time 'with me' is used in this verse; With Christ is our hope and secrutiy. Nobody can make such a statment without being able to ensure it. I know no better hands to be in than my Lord's blessed hands. He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him.
